AHL Photos: Charlotte Checkers vs. Manitoba Moose

The Manitoba Moose traveled to Charlotte, N.C. to face the Charlotte Checkers in back-to-back games Jan 27 and Jan 28.

The parent club of the Checkers, the Carolina Hurricanes, sent goaltender Eddie Lack to Charlotte for a conditioning stint prior to the matchup.  Lack backstopped the Checkers during both games against the Moose goaltender Eric Comrie.

Friday, the Checkers would strike first from forward Andrej Nestrasil, who only needed twenty seconds to bury the puck behind Comrie. Charlotte would leave the first period with a 1-0 lead. Coming back for the second, Checkers forward Kris Newbury added a goal 1:37 into the period.  Despite their efforts, the Moose would not be able to answer this goal either, leaving the second 2-0 Checkers.  The Checkers increased their lead, 3-0, 1:09 into the third period when forward Lucas Wallmark brought their total to three.  The Moose found their opportunity 5:43 into the third when forward JC Lipon finally solved Lack.  The Moose made a final push by pulling Comrie in favor of the extra skater.  The Checkers were able to seal their 4-1 win when Wallmark scored an empty net goal.

Lack earned the win and third star honors in his return debut.  The Moose out shot the Checkers 29-27. Additionally, Newbury’s play against the Moose would earn him an AHL contract with the team.

Saturday, the Moose bounced back from their loss the previous night.  Moose forward Brendan Lemieux scored 5:32 into the first period. Charlotte would not find an opportunity in the first period, leaving it 1-0 Manitoba.  The Moose gained a two goal lead when forward Kyle Connor put the puck past Lack 10:59 into the second period.  Five minutes later, Checkers forward Andrew Poturalski cut the Moose lead by one.  This would be the last goal of the game as both goaltenders were perfect in the third period. At the final buzzer, Manitoba would take the 2-1 victory over Charlotte.  The Checkers out shot the Moose 36-33.  Comrie’s 35 saves earned him first star honors.

Next, the Manitoba Moose will face the San Jose Barracuda at home in back-to-back games Feb 3-4.  The Charlotte Checkers will travel to Glendale Ariz. to face the Tucson Roadrunners in back-to-back games, also, Feb 3-4.
