AHL Photos: Lehigh Valley Phantoms vs. Springfield Thunderbirds

The Springfield Thunderbirds traveled to Allentown , Pa., this past Saturday, April 8, to face the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The Phantoms were looking to bounce back from their 3-0 loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous night and secure a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Springfield opened scoring 3:54 into the first period via forward Paul Thompson. Lehigh Valley’s Corban Knight answered back 10 minutes later. Before the period ended, the Phantoms gained the lead on defenseman T.J. Brennan’s power-play slapper while Thunderbirds forward Jayce Hawryluk served a two-minutes interference penalty.

At 0:34 of the second period, Thunderbirds forward Chase Balisy would even the score, but the Phantoms regained the lead via forward Andy Miele’s at 9:50. Phantoms forward Scott Laughton sealed the 4-2 win when he scored 11:21 into the third period.

Lehigh Valley goaltender Alex Lyon stopped 44 of 46 Springfield shots, earning first-star honors for the night. Miele and Knight earned second- and third-star honors respectively, having each recorded one goal and one assist. At the other end, Thunderbirds goaltender Adam Wilcox stopped 30 of 34 Phantoms shots.

Both teams will return to action Wednesday, April 12. The Phantoms will travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to face the Penguins for their final match of the regular season while Thunderbirds return home to face the Providence Bruins.
