A clash of powerhouses occurred on Jan 16, in Tucson. The Ontario Reign and the Tucson Roadrunners faced off for the sixth time this season. These two teams are also first and second in the AHL’s Pacific division.
Reign and Roadrunners games are notoriously physical events due to the rivalry the two teams have with each other and the rivalry that their parent clubs have. This trend continued for this game when Michael Latta and Dakota Mermis dropped the gloves in the second period.
The Reign scored first from Jonny Brodzinski in the first period. The Roadrunners wouldn’t be able to make the board until the second period. In the second, the Roadrunners scored twice, first from Chris Mueller and then from Henrik Samuelsson. In the third period, the Reign tied the game with a shot from Adrian Kempe. However, Tucson would win the game with a shot from Zbynek Michalek. The Roadrunners went on to win the game 3-2.
The two teams would meet again on Jan 18, where the Roadrunners would top the Reign again, this time 4-1. Next, Tucson is set to play the Charlotte Checkers and Ontario is set to play the San Jose Barracuda on Jan 21.
