On Jan 14, the Tucson Roadrunners hosted the second game in the home-and-home series against the Texas Stars. The Roadrunners took the first game on Thursday night with a commanding 5-2 win. The last time the two teams played against each other was a 4-3 win for Stars back in early November.
Saturday night’s game was a special occasion for many reasons. First, the Roadrunners were wearing limited edition University of Arizona jerseys. The Roadrunners and the university’s hockey team share the Tucson Convention Center arena. The jerseys were auctioned off at the end of the night. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds went to the university’s hockey program. Second, Captain Craig Cunningham was in attendance for the game. This would be his first time back in the arena after collapsing on the ice two months ago.
To honor the special occasion, the Roadrunners would extend their win streak to three games. The first period saw three Tucson goals. The Roadrunners scored from Stefan Fournier, Christian Fischer, and Michael Bunting. However, Texas would not find an opportunity to the light the post until the second period. The Stars would find their first opportunity in the second from Julius Honka. Moving forward, the Stars would find the second and final opportunity in the second from Michael Stransky. The Roadrunners kept their one goal lead until the end of the game, where they would take the victory. Tucson won, 3-2.
Next, the Roadrunners are set to play the Ontario Reign. While the Stars play San Antonio Rampage Jan 16.
