College Photos: Air Force Falcons vs Robert Morris Colonials
The Robert Morris University Colonials met with the Air Force Academy Falcons Jan 20-21 in Moon Township, Pa. Going into the weekend, the Air Force Academy was first in the Atlantic Hockey standings. Meanwhile, Robert Morris was sitting in fourth in the standings.
In the first night of the weekend match up, the Colonials fell to the Falcons 6-2. As expected, the game was aggressive and sloppy. The Colonials switched out their goaltender, Francis Marotte, in the second period after allowing three goals. Dalton Izyk, their senior goaltender, was put in for the remainder of the game. Izyk had been out of the line up with a lower body injury, so this was his first ice time since November.
The Saturday match up between the teams was a different feel then the night before. The teams seemed more focused and calm, but they did keep their aggressive edge as expected. Robert Morris returned two players to their lineup, Kyle Horsman from injury and Alex Dagnal as a healthy scratch. Meanwhile, the Air Force Academy added Johnny Hrabovsky, a Senior Class Award candidate, to their healthy scratch list for the weekend.
The Colonials found the net first at four minutes into the game. Sophomore forward, Alex Tonge, tipped one in from Timmy Moore and Eric Israel. The Falcons would be unable to find an opportunity to get one past Francis Marotte, though. With the Colonials outshooting the Falcons 10-4, the first period would end 1-0 RMU.
Coming back for the second, the teams would battle it out but ultimately the Colonials would find the net once again. With his second of the night, Alex Tonge would slide one past Air Force’s Billy Christopoulos, from Sean Giles and Dan Leavens. Additionally, with the assist on the goal, this would be freshman defense, Sean Giles, first college point. After Alex Dagnal of RMU went to the box for cross-checking at the 10 minute mark, the Falcons would find their chance. Tyler Ledford, junior forward, would tip one past Marotte from Trevor Stone and Dan Bailey. With the Falcons outshooting the Colonials 13-8, the second period would end 2-1 RMU.
Coming back out for the third period, Air Force was looking to tie up the game and the Colonials were looking for that third goal for Tonge. Both teams got more aggressive while looking to end the game on a high note but did not record any penalty minutes during the period. Unfortunately, neither team would find their chance to score before the final buzzer. The series was split with a Robert Morris victory, 2-1.
Looking forward in Atlantic Hockey, the Colonials head to the College of the Holy Cross for a weekend series. Meanwhile, Air Force has a home series against Army Jan 28-29 in Colorado.
