10 best one-movie Mighty Ducks actors

Like all hockey franchises, the Mighty Ducks trilogy had its share of personnel changes during its run. The protagonist team dressed 19 players over the course of the three films, but only seven kid actors were in all of them. Aside from that, only Emilio Estevez (coach Gordon Bombay) appeared as the same character from start to finish.

It is worth noting that, just as Adam Banks wore different crests in some of the same movies, several actors assumed new roles in one or both sequels. According to the Internet Movie Database, script writer Steven Brill went from Bombay’s rival attorney in the original to an anonymous house guest in D2 to a carny in D3. Another noteworthy example is Scott Whyte playing Iceland scorer Gunnar Stahl in the second film, then Eden Hall’s varsity goaltender in the third.

As a consequence of those returns, neither of those actors are eligible for this ranking of one-off Mighty Ducks trilogy actors. Of those who played only one character and appeared in only one-third of the trilogy, these are the 10 most memorable.

10. Jane Plank

Plank played Tammy Duncan in The Mighty Ducks. Tammy is originally a figure skater before being recruited with her brother, Tommy, by Coach Bombay to join the team at midseason.

Her character progresses well during the film. First, she needs to be convinced to play by her brother until she begins to truly enjoy herself. She even uses her figure-skating expertise to score a pivotal goal late in the championship game.

9. Aaron Schwartz

As Dave Karp, Schwartz is one of the go-to guys for comedic relief in the first film. Karp is overly sarcastic at many points during the movie, and was hilarious to viewers his age at the time.

Nowadays, the luster has worn off, but one can still appreciate how well Schwartz played his role.

8. Michael Tucker

Tucker plays Don Tibbles in D2. Tibbles brings the Ducks together with the national talents for Team USA in the Junior Goodwill Games.

His character progresses incredibly over the movie, as he slowly but surely embraces the Ducks and ultimately gives a head nod of approval as the credits roll. From the original awkwardness in his first meeting with Bombay, to his terrible skating and being hit by a puck, Tucker shows how someone would grow to love hockey.

7. J.D. Daniels

Peter Mark is best remembered as the player who organizes the walkout on Bombay in the original. Daniels masters the role of a cocky kid well, carrying himself excellently and looking the part as well.

6. Carsten Norgaard

Playing Wolf Stansson, the Icelandic coach in D2, Norgaard embodies the only character in the series who seems truly evil. Nicknamed “The Dentist” for his use of a hockey stick in the NHL, there is always that eerie vibe when he is on camera.

His slash on Bombay is bad during their one-on-one, but he also makes a comically evil move when he pops the Ducks’ beach ball. Only someone truly mean-spirited could do that.

He does, however, play a role in the happy ending by shaking his enemies’ hands after his team’s gold-medal defeat. It is a lesson for all of the young people watching, teaching them that sportsmanship is always important and that no one is above it.

10 best one-movie Mighty Ducks trilogy actors Jussie Smollett

5. Jussie Smollett

Terry Hall, the younger brother of Jesse in the original, will be a common trivia answer in the future, as Smollett has recently risen to stardom. For his part as Jamal on Empire, he was nominated for Best Actor at the 2015 BET Awards.

Smollett provides a good counter to Jesse, who is super abrasive and tends to rush to decisions. If you are having trouble remembering Jesse, who left the series after two movies, he was the character who greets Banks as “cake eater.”

4. Kathryn Erbe

Michelle McKay, the team tutor in D2, is a character who greatly appeals to the movie’s older viewers. She truly cares about the kids and makes sure that their schoolwork comes first.

Like Tibbles, her love of hockey seems to grow as the movie goes on. From originally cancelling Team USA’s practice due to the kids falling asleep in class to coaching them while Bombay is AWOL, Erbe plays the role of someone who has the kids’ future in mind.

3. Jan Rubes

The late Rubes played Hans’ brother, Jan, filling Joss Ackland’s void in D2, which is explained as a visit to their native Scandinavia. Jan has a relatively minor role in the movie, but has a huge impact on the outcome.

He makes a surprise trip to Los Angeles and reminds Bombay about his love for the game when Bombay is losing touch with the team. When Bombay returns late in a pivotal game, the Ducks are rejuvenated by his presence and defeat Germany.

As for Jan, his biggest impact is unveiling Team USA’s new Duck jerseys during the second intermission of the championship game. With the new look, the team turns a 4-1 deficit into a 5-5 tie and eventual shootout victory.

Rubes manages to make his character remarkably like that of Hans and deserves accolades for his brief appearances.

2. Lane Smith

As Hawks coach Jack Reilly in the original, the late Smith is the first main antagonist in the Mighty Ducks trilogy. Bombay’s coach from almost two decades prior when he hit the post, costing the Hawks the championship, he reappears as Gordon’s head-to-head rival.

Smith is almost never seen happy, and is the thorn in the Ducks side at each turn in the movie. There just seems to be an air around Coach Reilly. He was the killer of all fun whenever he appeared.

1. Jeffrey Nordling

As Eden Hall junior varsity coach Ted Orion, Bombay’s replacement in D3, Nordling has perhaps the most character progression of anyone through the movie.

Early on, Orion’s coaching style clashes heavily with what the Ducks are used to. His character looks like he hates fun, much like Smith in the part of Reilly, and is never smiling until the conclusion of the film.

Eventually, he and the Ducks gel and come together like a well-oiled machine. But during the character’s development, Nordling effectively gives off vibes that lend tension to scenes that might not otherwise have it.
