Three Rivers Classic Photos: Boston College vs Ferris State University

Boston College played Ferris State University in the consolation game of the Three Rivers Classic on Dec 30. The first round of the tournament was on Dec 29 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Eagles had faced Quinnipiac University in the first round and fell 3-1. While the Bulldogs had faced Robert Morris University and fell 1-0.

The Bulldogs took an early lead at the 14 second mark of the first period. Sophomore forward and Pennsylvania native, Corey Mackin, fired one past Ryan Edquist. Mackin with his 7th of the season with assists from Jared VanWormer and Ryan Lowney. Despite Boston College’s superb effort, with 20 shots on goal in the first, they were unable to score. First period ended 1-0, Ferris State in the lead.

Although both teams came back strong for the second, neither team would light the lamp. But, Boston College would record another 20 shots on goal while Ferris had 11.

After returning for the third, it would only take the Eagles four shots to finally net a goal. 15 minutes into the third with 44 shots on goal, Michael Kim of Boston College would find the net, tying the game. The Bulldogs were unable to answer the goal in the third sending the game into a five minute overtime. In spite of a full fight for the five minutes, both teams only recorded three shots on goal. Leaving the game with an official score of 1-1.

However, both teams agreed to an unofficial shootout to determine a winner. First round of Austin Cangelosi (BC) and Craig Pefley (FSU) went scoreless. Next round, JD Dudek of Boston College sends the puck through Justin Kapelmaster’s legs. But, Gerald Mayhew of Ferris State would not be as lucky. The third and final round, Matthew Gaudreau (BC) and Corey Mackin (FSU) would also be scoreless. Boston College would unofficially win 2-1.

Freshman goaltender, Justin Kapelmaster of Ferris State would record 56 saves with only 2 goals allowed. Kapelmaster walked into the game with a record of 5-1-0.
