This past Tuesday, Marvel Entertainment posted an Avengers: Infinity War teaser. The company promised a trailer for the highly-anticipated film would drop the next day.
Following through on that promise, the movie’s first trailer logged literally millions of views by the hour on the day of its release.
Of course, fans will still have to wait until May for the film’s theatrical debut. With that said, the trailer signals a satisfying conclusion to the Avengers story line.
To start, the trailer has Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury speaking of gathering remarkable people together to fight the battles that others never could.
After the Marvel logo, viewers see jam-packed action sequences, all of which hint at the conflict between the Avengers and Thanos. Fans who missed San Diego Comic-Con this past summer finally see the giant villain and hear his dramatic monologue about destiny and “knowing what it is like to lose.”
Fans will still have to wait until May for the film’s theatrical debut. With that said, the trailer signals a satisfying conclusion to the Avengers story line.
Based on previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) releases, some of these characters meet for the first time. But because Thanos poses such an imminent threat, long pleasantries will be cast aside in favor of banding together.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will collide. Ditto Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team.
The trailer also confirms a few theories that popped up after previous MCU films. At the end of Captain America: Civil War, the title character dropped his shield. The directors said that it symbolized the end of the Captain America identity.
Fittingly, Chris Evans’ character does not carry a shield in the Infinity War trailer. In the comics, Steve Rogers goes by the name “Nomad” for a brief time. It remains to be seen whether the directors will choose that route for the movie.
Furthermore, viewers see a member of Thanos’ Black Order attacking Paul Bettany’s Vision. This moment could foreshadow Vision’s demise and signify that no fan favorite is safe from Thanos’ wrath.
Finally, in Thor: Ragnarok, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki stole the Tesseract from Odin’s vault. In this trailer, he gives the blue orb to an unknown person. The presumed recipient is Thanos himself, as he later puts the stone into his gauntlet.
At the end of the two-minute trailer, the Avengers confront an attacking army in Wakanda, a fictional African nation home to Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther.
While the trailer promises a riveting finale to MCU Phase III, it is nevertheless bittersweet. Beloved characters such as Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America will soon give way to Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Ant-Man. The old Marvel mainstays could make an ultimate sacrifice to preserve the future for newcomers or they could simply “retire.”
Kevin Feige, the head producer of Marvel Studios, has already noted to The Verge that a distinctly new direction for the MCU lies ahead. The transition will implicitly begin with the slated May 2019 release of Avengers 4, which will conclude everything in the Infinity War story-arc.
Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo face the challenge of avoiding the same trap as Justice League. Comic-book fans and casual viewers alike have high expectations.
After this saga concludes, Marvel would have compiled a 22-movie story that rival DC Comics has struggled to replicate. With the mixed reception to Justice League, DC producers are looking for more innovative ways to build off the success of Wonder Woman.
Unlike the Avengers films, Justice League rushed through plot elements and proved unable to flesh out compelling characters like the Flash and Cyborg.
Remarkably, Marvel has not faced this dilemma in either of its two previous Avengers films. Instead, it has accomplished a miraculous feat with the story they have told so far. Most characters have their own movie, making everyone’s motivation to fight Thanos more apparent.
With the largest cast yet, Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo face the challenge of avoiding the same trap as Justice League. Comic-book fans and casual viewers alike have high expectations for the so-called “heist film.”
Like all stories, the saga of the Avengers needs a satisfying ending. With the entire team assembling for one of its final times, fans should not be disappointed.
