The Mercyhurst Lakers and the Robert Morris Colonials met at the RMU Island Sports Center on Dec 17. The Western Pa rivals faced each other in their first of two home-and-home series against each other.
The first period of the Saturday night match up would end scoreless. The Lakers would end the period with 17 shots on goal and the Colonials with 12 shots on goal. Eventually, the Colonials would light the post on the power play, with a goal for Timmy Moore from Eric Israel. The Lakers would answer with a quick shot from Jonathan Charbonneau. Once again, Robert Morris would find the net. Brady Ferguson would score his 10th goal of the season for the Colonials to give them a 2-1 lead. However, Charbonneau would slide the puck past Robert Morris for his second of the night to tie up the score. Before the end of the second, the Laker’s Stephen Hrehoriak would also find the net giving them a 3-2 lead.
Returning to the ice for the third, neither team could find an opportunity to score. However, at the 11 minute mark, the Lakers head to the box putting the Colonials on the power play. Team Captain, Rob Mann, for Robert Morris handles the puck in front of the Laker’s net and fires one past Colin DeAugustine. The senior defenseman scored his first power play goal of his career. The Colonials tied up the game 3-3 sending them into a five minute overtime.
Despite the Colonials efforts, the Lakers would out shoot them 6-3 in the overtime and Derek Barach would score with 30 seconds left in overtime. The Mercyhurst Lakers beat the Robert Morris Colonials 4-3 in overtime.
The Laker’s and the Colonials headed to Erie, Pa for the second game of the weekend Dec 18. After three period the teams tied 2-2 sending them into overtime, again. Looking back at the past 12 meetings between the teams, they have sent 8 into overtime. However, in this particular meeting neither team were able to score again. The Lakers and Colonials tie 2-2.
The Colonials have a bye week next weekend and then they return to Pittsburgh to host their Three Rivers Classic Dec 29-30. The Lakers also have a bye week and then make the journey to Minnesota for the Mariucci Classic Dec 30-31.
