Fuller House recently capped its third season wrapping up the main story arc fans have been following for its 44 Netflix episodes. Actually, it is more accurate to say that it provided a satisfying conclusion to its ABC predecessor’s cliffhanger at the end of its final season.
That allusion refers to the resolution of D.J.’s love life. After a 32-year wait, fans finally see the eldest Tanner daughter end up with her high-school sweetheart, Steve Hale.
With this conclusion, the show can finally head in a new direction. That fact inherently merits a series renewal, yet executive producer Jeff Franklin has not confirmed the show’s fourth season as of yet.
For numerous reasons, though, Netflix should avoid repeating ABC’s mistake from May of 1995 (the one it effectively corrected). Another season of Fuller House would bear a bevy of enticing storylines.
Starting with D.J., Fuller House left off with a massive cliffhanger in its midseason finale this past September. Covered with a sleeping mask, D.J. confesses her love for Steve on a plane. Unbeknownst to her, Steve had switched seats with her intended confidant, Kimmy, only moments prior.
With this knowledge and his impending wedding to CJ in Japan, Steve realizes that he could not marry her while loving D.J.. D.J. subsequently breaks her engagement with Matt to finally begin a relationship with Steve back in San Francisco.
Franklin confirmed that this confusing love triangle was the plan from the beginning for Full House’s successor.
“I was always disappointed in what happened on Full House when I left the show (after Season 5),” Franklin told Cinema Blend. “I thought Steve and D.J. were a really great couple and the audience was very invested in them.
“It was always my intention to give that relationship another chance, but I wanted to throw lots of obstacles in their way. It wasn’t just something we were going to jump into from the beginning. That’s where the triangle came from.”
With their relationship renewed, there are boundless possibilities for Steve and D.J. in a possible fourth season. The show could focus on Steve’s transition into step-fatherhood to D.J.’s sons and the challenges of a new father figure in their lives. Steve’s job could also disrupt his relationship with D.J.
Possibilities also abound for the newly abandoned Matt, played by John Brotherton. He could struggle to reconcile his strong friendship with Steve with his love for D.J. or he could find a new partner as well.
For the show’s other characters, there are options for season four. In the third-season finale, cast members new and old reunite in celebration of Full House’s 30th anniversary.
By the episode’s end, Rebecca and Danny lose their jobs as hosts of Wake Up, America and, while Becky gains a job back in San Francisco, Danny would like to move in with D.J.
Undoubtedly, fans would enjoy the comedic situations that could ensue with Bob Saget back in the equation. Regular sightings of Dave Coulier and the post-ER John Stamos could not hurt either.
There is already a basis for that. Joey and Jesse have repurchased the Smash Club, which is now a laundromat. Restoring the Smash Club could be an interesting arc in Season 4.
Meanwhile, Stephanie receives the good news that she will be a mother. Kimmy volunteers to carry her baby through a successful in vitro fertilization. Show writers could have jokes aplenty for Kimmy’s pregnancy in a fourth season.
Fuller House could finish its Netflix run on that note, though not without D.J. marrying Steve. That is an obligatory equivalent to Jesse and Rebecca’s wedding in the original.
These developments, along with Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen reprising her role as Michelle, would be this saga’s most appropriate conclusion.
