With more than a billion views on YouTube as of this writing, Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” song has been welcomed into the Tik Tok sphere by a new generation. It hasn’t been confirmed yet if Margot Robbie’s character from Suicide Squad would be cast as Barbie in the 2017 Barbie movie.
This evolution could be influenced by the close relationship between the Danish pop band and Mattel, the company that invented and owned the Barbie brand.
Mattel has expressed concern about the song’s offensive lyrics since its premiere, even going so far as to pursue a lawsuit against the musician.
To avoid a possible libel claim from Mattel, Barbie sings “Kiss me here, touch me there,” and Ken responds, according to the lawsuit.
Though a song like “Blonde Legend” would have been a good fit for the film, the producers may have insisted on a different approach to the story of the blonde legend.
Why Is Everyone Talking About Margot Robbie?
Fans of the ’90s pop era may be disappointed to learn that Aqua’s famous hit “Barbie Girl” will not be featured in the live-action Barbie film. Margot Robbie portrays Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie, which is based on the popular plastic doll. Images of Robbie dressed as Barbie was shown for the first time at the CinemaCon convention.
“Barbie Girl” would benefit greatly from the release of a film based on a real-life Barbie. For some Barbie fans, it’s a no-brainer to use the song for the end credits because it’s so strongly linked to the brand.
For whatever reason, the movie version of “Barbie Girl” does not include her. Aqua’s rocky relationship with Mattel may have something to do with Mattel’s involvement in the film, Variety reports. For trademark infringement, Mattel sued MCA Records after “Barbie Girl” became one of the most popular songs of 1997.
